LSC-University Park student-run literary arts magazine earns top national honor
HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College–University Park’s student-run literary arts magazine, “Uproar,” earned national recognition as a REALM First Class recipient, the program’s highest distinction, in the National Council of Teachers of English’s 2025 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines program.
“’Uproar’ already does a wonderful job celebrating our campus’ creative arts, but seeing contributors’ work recognized at a national level is incredibly rewarding for both the students and the faculty who support them,” said Amy Young, faculty co-sponsor of “Uproar”.
Now in its 13th year, “Uproar” gives LSC–University Park students a platform to publish original writing and visual art while gaining real-world editorial and design experience.
The REALM program recognizes student-produced literary and art magazines supported by educators, honoring excellence in writing, design and overall publication quality. In the 2025 cycle, NCTE recognized 135 magazines nationwide with First Class distinction out of 456 entries.
Selected from more than 400 entries nationwide, “Uproar’s” First-Class designation reflects the work of student editors and contributors, supported by faculty co-sponsors Gregory Oaks and Young, as well as art judges and professors Kari Breitigam and Chris Thompson. Student editors lead the selection and revision process, and about 30 contributors were chosen for this year’s edition, many earning their first publication credit.
“Uproar” will continue to provide students with opportunities to share their voices and develop their creative skills through future editions.
