THE WOODLANDS – It was a busy spring break for many teams, as district play finally began to intensify, offering teams plenty of chances to move up in the standings. The Woodlands Highlanders stayed hot all week, winning their three district matchups, including a series sweep of Willis and an opening win against Caney Creek. Many players contributed to these successes, but no one stood out more than Cash Clayton, who earns the Woodlands Church Player of the Week for his exceptional performance.

DH/P CASH CLAYTON WAS EXCELLENT THIS WEEK, HELPING THE HIGHLANDERS BEST THEIR RIVLAS THE WILLIS WILDKATS

The Woodlands started this week aiming to get back into the win column after splitting the series with Grand Oaks during out-of-district tournaments. Securing three key wins was crucial for getting the Highlanders back on track, and Cash Clayton played a significant role in that. In game 1 against Willis, Clayton had 1 hit in 3 at-bats, with his only hit being a double that started the 4th inning. He also reached base 3 times—once on a throwing error in the 1st inning and once after being hit by a pitch in the 2nd. Clayton ended up scoring 2 of the Highlanders’ 5 runs, the most of anyone that day, helping secure a well-earned victory.

In game 2 against Willis, Clayton wasn’t as effective offensively as he was in game 1, striking out twice and going hitless in 6 at-bats. However, he demonstrated his versatility on the mound, pitching 7 of the 12 innings and allowing only 1 run on 7 hits, along with 3 strikeouts. It was a solid outing that highlighted what he contributes to the team. The Woodlands and the Wildkats played 12 innings in this game, remaining tied at 1-1 until the top of the 12th, when Chase Bradley drove in 3 runs after an RBI walk from Cash McWhorter that made it 5-1. Clayton’s 7 innings is a lengthy stretch for someone who is also hitting, and his steady pitching kept the Highlanders in the game during the first half.

Finally, the Highlanders achieved their third win of spring break, run-ruling Caney Creek 10-0 in a Friday showdown. Clayton returned to his strong hitting performance, collecting 3 hits in 4 at-bats, scoring once, and driving in 2 runs. The only time he didn't record a hit was on a sacrifice fly ball that still scored a run, giving him his second RBI of the day.

Cash Clayton has been electric at the start of the lineup, serving as a big-time leadoff man who can get his offense going quickly at the beginning of the game. He has several multi-hit games so far, and that number will likely grow as the season goes on. If he and the Woodlands keep playing like this, they will certainly be a dangerous team for any district opponent they face.
