The Woodlands Highlanders Take Down Magnolia West In An Electric Pitching Battle
THE WOODLANDS – Out-of-district games are rare at this point in the season, but when they happen, they often lead to some exciting baseball. The Woodlands Highlanders traveled to Magnolia to face the Magnolia West Mustangs, a team currently sitting in 3rd place in the highly competitive District 15 of 6A. It was a highly anticipated matchup since the beginning of the season, and it did not disappoint. In a back-and-forth pitching duel with both starters going all 7 innings, The Woodlands secured a 1-0 victory, proving they’re formidable even outside their district.
Pitching battles can be nail-biters at any level of baseball, and this game was no exception. It was no surprise that The Woodlands relied on their ace, Jack Smejkal, who has delivered strong performances in recent starts. The University of Texas commit pitched an outstanding game, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out nine batters. He pitched the full seven innings and seemed to improve as his pitch count increased. In the final three innings, he recorded five strikeouts, with a notable performance in the sixth inning, when he navigated through runners on the corners with two outs. With a performance like this, the Highlanders have probably found their guy on the mound, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Smejkal in some big games in the future. Outside of Smejkal, the defense behind him was excellent, with 3rd baseman Elias Diaz making some incredible throws to 1st base multiple times throughout. Overall, the defense stepped up and was the reason the Highlanders pulled through this close game.
On the opposite side, the offense for The Woodlands was relatively quiet for most of the night, as Magnolia West put their own ace on the mound, Everett Huffman. A Tarleton State Commit, Huffman, pitched just as well as Smejkal, striking out 8 Highlanders while only allowing 3 hits. Of the hits he did give up, 2 were to Cash McWhorter, who seemed to be the only one able to do any damage to Huffman’s solid outing. McWhorter started off hot, hitting a single to center field on his 1st at bat in the 2nd inning, advancing to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Johan Fernandez then reached 1st on a throwing error, allowing McWhorter to score the Highlanders sole run of the game. He then hit a double in deep into left field in the top of the 4th inning, before a line drive was caught in right field in the 7th, making him 2 for 3 on the night. McWhorter's aggressive baserunning early in this game is what led to the Highlander’s victory, and there’s no doubt he was the most important player on offense last night.
With a big road win against an out-of-district opponent, The Woodlands now feels like a team poised for a district title run. The pitching has improved significantly over the past few weeks, and although the offense was slow in this game, it still has plenty of firepower throughout the lineup. They will continue district play against a struggling Cleveland team this Friday and will aim to claim the top spot in the district as April approaches. If there is one thing to take away from this game, it’s that the Magnolia Schools would be a great addition to our district, as the rivalry last night was electrifying, and the play was so exciting that we wish there were more games like it.
