NEW CANEY, TX -- On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at approximately 1:00 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 19000 block of FM 1485 in New Caney regarding a report of a bail bondsman attempting to make contact with a male subject.

Upon arrival, it was reported that the subject opened the door of his residence, armed with a pistol, and refused to surrender. The bail bondsman immediately contacted law enforcement. East Command Patrol Deputies arrived on scene, where the suspect subsequently barricaded himself inside a camper trailer and refused to comply with law enforcement.

It was determined that the suspect had two active felony warrants out of Lavaca County. Due to the location being within a densely populated RV park, and to ensure the safety of all residents and responding personnel, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Precinct 1 Constable’s Office Mental Health Unit were called to assist.

After several hours of negotiations, the suspect remained noncompliant. SWAT members ultimately made entry into the residence, where they located the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. SWAT operators immediately began life-saving measures, and EMS transported the suspect to a local hospital. Despite these efforts, the suspect was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The suspect has been identified as 66- year-old David Dobson of New Caney.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives, The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and The Texas Rangers responded to the scene and will continue their investigation.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, Precinct 4 Constable’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety for their assistance.

This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.
