The Latino Journey of Montgomery County Exhibit Opens
Texas Familias Council and Heritage Museum Of Mont. County open exhibit
CONROE, TX -- The Texas Familias Council, in collaboration with the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County, curated a new exhibit titled, The Latino Journey of Montgomery County. This is the first historical exhibit sharing the story of the Latino community in Montgomery County. The temporary exhibit opened May 2 and will be on display through this summer.
The Council team worked on the exhibit over several months to honor the memory of many people who have helped build what would become Montgomery County. Conroe native Janice Vasquez, is a local artist who created an interactive, temporary sculpture called “Luz”. Local artist, Magda Macias and Adriana Flower conducted oral history interviews of local residents, Devery Goss and Alejandra Tapia consulted and gathered historical information and items, and Council President Maria Baños Jordan researched the timeline of the exhibit. Local Latino artist pieces are also on display.
'It was our vision to share the story of the land and people over generations and honor the contributions of people of Latin American descent. We wanted to display the beauty of Latino cultures and build bridges between all communities. This has been a labor of love for us and we hope families visit the full display this summer” said Maria Baños Jordan. Maria and former Museum Board President, Gloria White,
began conversations about the exhibit late last summer.
Suann Hereford, Director of the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County, and Blake Spencer, Director’s Assistant, worked closely with the curators to bring a special experience to the community. The exhibit will be condensed for a permanent display after summer.
The Texas Familias Council has served the region since 2011 with family guidance and leadership support.
Members will host exhibit gatherings through the summer to foster community learning.
The museum is free Wed.-Sat. 9am-4pm located at 1506 I45 N, Conroe 77301
