33-Year-Old Man Dies After Drowning While Fishing in River Near Sorters Road in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX -- On July 12, 2026, at approximately 6:18 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a possible drowning in a river near the intersection of Hill Road and Sorters Road.
The caller stated that a Hispanic male, later identified as 33-year-old Jose Negrete, had been fishing in the river when he was overcome by the current and began struggling to swim to safety. Multiple acquaintances who were with Mr. Negrete immediately attempted to assist him from the shoreline, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Responding agencies conducted a search of the area, and Mr. Negrete was later found deceased approximately 50 feet from the shoreline by the North Montgomery County Fire Department Dive Team.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. At this time this appears to be a tragic accident and there are no indications of any criminal acts related to this death.
