Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Announces Increased Security at Willis ISD After Firearms Incidents

WILLIS, TX -- The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with Willis ISD following the recent incidents involving firearms being brought onto campus at Willis High School. The safety of students, staff, families, and the entire school community remains our highest priority.

Beginning today, All students will enter the campus through metal detectors and will have their backpacks searched. Willis High School also plans to transition to clear backpacks in the coming weeks.

In addition, law-enforcement presence will be increased across Willis ISD campuses.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Willis ISD continue to stress the importance of reporting concerning behavior, threats, weapons, or information that may place others at risk. Statements, posts, messages, or comments suggesting violence or threats toward a school are taken seriously. Claiming that a threat was “just a joke” does not eliminate the potential consequences. Threat-related conduct can lead to school discipline, criminal investigation, and arrest when warranted.

Texas law strictly prohibits firearms on school campuses. Under Texas Penal Code Section 46.03, knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly possessing or bringing a firearm onto the premises of a school, onto school-sponsored activity grounds, or onto a school transportation vehicle may constitute a third-degree felony. A third-degree felony is generally punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Texas law also requires the expulsion of a student who brings a firearm to school.
