THE WOODLANDS – We finally got some Thursday night action this week, and luckily for us, it was a big-time rivalry game. The Grand Oaks Grizzlies and Oak Ridge War Eagles battled it out at Woodforest Bank Stadium in the Battle of the Oaks, and it turned out to be much closer than we expected. The Grizzlies came into the game down after a crushing loss to Willis the week prior, but they were still firmly in control of their own destiny within the district. Oak Ridge was also coming off a tough loss, having suffered a crushing blow from Conroe after an already rough start to the season. Both teams came into this one ready to put it all on the line, and it showed throughout the game. In the end, the Grizzlies pulled off the win, 26-22, in a chaotic game that saw the War Eagles almost take the lead back in the 4th quarter. Let's dive into this one and see how each team did last night.

THIS GAME ALMOST GOT AWAY FROM OAK RIDGE, BUT THEY BATTLED TO THE END DESPITE COMING UP SHORT AGAINST A STRONG GRAND OAKS TEAM

1st Half: Ruling The Run Game

The 1st half was quick, as both teams ran the ball on almost every play, given that the Grizzlies and War Eagles have some of the best RBs in the district. The Grizzlies started hot, recovering a muffed punt at the Oak Ridge 35-yard line and setting up a 30-yard dump pass from QB Harley Adams to WR Darnell Jackson Jr. for the first TD. When the War Eagles finally got their offense on the field, RB Cody Cooksey took them to the Grand Oaks 30-yard line on several solid runs. Cooksey made a critical error, though, fumbling on a 3rd & 3 run that was recovered by Grand Oaks, killing a great drive for the War Eagles. The Grizzlies took advantage of the turnover, as RB Kaden Carter gashed the defense for a 70-yard TD run, putting the Grizzlies up 14-0. Carter has been one of Grand Oaks' most reliable weapons this season, and runs like this remind us of all the talent they had rushing the ball last season.

The War Eagles responded on the next drive, however, with a bold fake punt in their own territory that kept the drive alive and gave this offense critical momentum. Cooksey continued his solid running, almost scoring on a 20-yard run in which he powered through multiple tacklers before stepping out at the 2-yard line. Josiah Norman then punched it in on the next play, giving the War Eagles their first TD and cutting the score to 14-7. The 1st quarter ended on the next drive, as the Grizzlies were forced to punt after the Oak Ridge defense came up strong again.

To start the 2nd quarter, Oak Ridge was forced to punt again, this time from their own end zone, giving the Grizzlies great starting field position. Grand Oaks RB Brian Victorian Jr. then drove the Grizzlies into the red zone, but strong defensive pressure from Oak Ridge DE Finn Walker kept the Grizzlies out of the end zone and forced a field goal. That FG missed, just right of the posts, leaving Oak Ridge with the ball and no points added to Grand Oaks' lead. That drive featured more valiant running from Cooksey, but the Grand Oaks defense ultimately forced a punt.

Oak Ridge then got the ball back quickly when DB DJ Miller snagged a beautiful interception on a deep pass from Adams. The War Eagles couldn’t do anything with the pick, and Grand Oaks got the ball back deep in their own territory. The rest of the half was mostly punts, and both teams headed into the locker rooms with the score still at 14-7. So far, Oak Ridge was playing far above expectations, with Cooksey showing off on some great runs and the defense playing very well despite allowing 2 TDs early.

2nd Half: A Lost Game Almost Turns Around

To start the 2nd half, the War Eagles got the ball and, despite some good runs from Cooksey, were forced to punt again after a false start killed their chances to go for it on 4th & 3. Adams then began throwing the ball more aggressively, moving the Grizzlies into Oak Ridge territory with some great throws. Jackson made a fantastic catch on 3rd & long, bobbling the ball before securing it on a critical conversion over the middle. Adams capped his solid drive with a 25-yard pass to WR Brandon Francis in the end zone, extending the Grizzlies' lead to 20-7 (the extra point was blocked). Not much happened for the rest of the 3rd quarter as both teams remained heavily committed to the run, running the clock quickly. Jackson made a nice catch to end the quarter, bringing the Grizzlies inside the Oak Ridge 30-yard line, and then had another awesome catch at the 2-yard line that was unfortunately called back due to a holding penalty. That brought us into the 4th quarter, where things got a little weird in the end.

The 4th quarter began with Grand Oaks still near the Oak Ridge 30-yard line, poised to put the game away. After a solid 4th-down conversion by RB Isaias Moreno, Adams found Jackson again in the end zone corner for the duo’s 2nd TD of the game, putting the Grizzlies up a commanding 26-7. The 2-point conversion was no good, keeping the deficit from growing for the War Eagles. That lead didn’t deter the War Eagles, though, as Cooksey made a huge play that seemed inevitable given how he was playing. He caught a quick dump-off pass from Scott and took it 70 yards to the house, scoring a huge TD to bring the score to 26-14 with only 8 minutes left to play. Oak Ridge got the ball back after a big stop by their defense, but a missed 4th-down conversion in their own territory looked like the end for the War Eagles, as there were only 4 minutes left.

The Grizzlies struck quickly, with Adams hitting Carter on a pass that he took all the way to the Oak Ridge 5-yard line. The crazy part came when Oak Ridge popped the ball out of Carter’s hands, forcing a fumble that rolled out of the back of the end zone, resulting in the rare touchback out-of-bounds rule that we don’t see often at any level of football. This huge break gave the War Eagles a massive momentum swing that they quickly carried into the following drive. Cooksey then made another huge play, running all the way from his own 20 to the Grand Oaks 30-yard line, putting the War Eagles in prime position to cut this lead even further with just 3 mins left. WR Jermiah Matthews then caught a pass from Scott, which he took all the way to the 10-yard line after a great run after the catch. Cooksey then punched it in on a couple of hard runs, scoring his 2nd TD of the game and bringing the score to 26-22 after a good 2-point conversion. The War Eagles then tried an onside kick that somehow went their way, putting the offense back on the field to try and win the game. Unfortunately, despite all the great play Oak Ridge had shown in the final few minutes, they were forced into a 4th-down situation and did not convert, turning the ball over to the Grizzlies. The War Eagles defense didn't quit, though, stopping the Grizzlies and forcing a punt, using their 2 remaining timeouts to stop the clock. However, just like the 1st punt in this game, the returner muffed the punt with 40 seconds left, giving the ball right back to Grand Oaks, who ended the game kneeling and winning 26-22.

Final Thoughts:

On paper, this game looked like a win for the Grizzlies, and even though it was, it was anything but easy. Oak Ridge did everything they could to come back, and even with some lucky breaks, they just couldn't seal the deal. Still, the War Eagles played a solid game overall, with the defense looking much improved. Guys like Cooksey on offense and Miller on defense really showed out. Even though moral victories don’t feel as good as a win, the War Eagles will hopefully get themselves back into winning form, as this team could do some damage if they get going.

For the Grizzlies, this was a big-time win and a confidence boost after last week's struggles. Darnell Jackson Jr. looked like the star Grand Oaks knows he is, and the RB room, with Carter, Victorian, and Moreno, looks like one of the more stable backfields in the district. Adams played a solid game, aside from his interception, passing the 1000-yard mark for the season and showing why he won the starting job for the Grizzlies. This Grizzlies team has firm control of their destiny, and a return to the postseason is certainly not out of the question for them now.
