THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- “The kids have been nothing short of spectacular all season long and were exemplary this week at the competition,” stated Joni Perez, The Woodlands High School Band Director.

The Woodlands High School marching band won their first ever national title at the Bands of America (BOA) Grand National Championship in Indianapolis, IN, on Saturday, November 16, 2013. Bands of America is the national marching contest circuit that puts on competitions around the country under the umbrella organization of Music for All. The BOA National Championships is recognized as the premier marching band event in the nation.

“The Woodlands High School Band has had an incredible season with so many memorable experiences. The students have been so positive and inspiring this fall and are incredibly deserving of this special and historical honor! We are so thankful to be a part of something so special and are grateful to our parents, faculty, administration and the community for all of the support the band has received over the course of the season,” stated Perez. “We are especially happy for all of the former TWHS Band alumni, parents and directors of years past, who have been such an important and influential part of The Woodlands High School Band's history.”

It has been a whirlwind of a competition season this year for TWHS Marching Band. In October, they competed against 27 bands in the BOA Conroe Regional Competition where they received awards for Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect and became the 2013 BOA Conroe Regional Champions. One month later, the Band traveled to San Antonio to compete in the BOA Super Regional Competition where they competed against 64 marching bands from around Texas and other parts of the country. TWHS Band earned the High Visual and High General Effect awards as well as their first ever San Antonio Super Regional Championship.

The 2013 BOA Grand National Championship field competition featured approximately 90 bands in preliminary competition last Thursday and Friday, and 36 bands advanced to semi-finals during the day on Saturday. Twelve bands made it to the finals on Saturday evening. All performances took place in Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis.

Five of the twelve finalists were marching bands from Texas, but one Texas band stood out. TWHS Band won all three rounds with the highest score. The Band was recognized with the Visual and Effect award, and with a final score of 96.80, TWHS Band was named National Champions.

“The directors and staff are so very proud of the band members for their dedication, positive work ethic and team spirit,” commented Perez. “The Woodlands High School Band is proud to represent The Woodlands High School, Conroe ISD, the community and the state of Texas.”
