Woodlands CVB issues proclamation for National Travel and Tourism Week

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- As The Woodlands continues to emerge as a destination for vacationing families, business travelers and groups, The Woodlands Convention & Visitors Bureau once again is recognizing National Travel & Tourism Week, May 3 -11, with an official proclamation acknowledging the impact of travel to the area.

Most notably, hotels in The Woodlands generated $6.6 million in hotel occupancy taxes for The Woodlands Township’s general fund in 2013. According to The Woodlands CVB, hundreds of thousands of travelers from countries around the world visit The Woodlands each year for business and leisure travel. Plus, tourism is a $2 billion business in Montgomery County with 80 percent of that taking place in The Woodlands, according to a 2008 study by The Perryman Corporation.

“We’ve created a destination that appeals to vacationing families looking to unwind, shop and dine in a setting unlike any other in the region,” notes Gordy Bunch, chairman of The Woodlands CVB.

While The Woodlands has made its mark as a leisure destination, Bunch adds it also is drawing attention as a Texas meeting destination for groups of all sizes.

“The area offers a distraction-free environment away from the congestion of the big city with first-class meeting facilities and the amenities and venues groups need for entertaining and teambuilding,” he says.

With the opening of a new Hyatt Place, the expansion of The Woodlands Resort and plans for a 303-room luxury hotel in Waterway Square overlooking The Woodlands Waterway, Bunch adds The Woodlands CVB is optimistic about the continued growth of travel and tourism to the area.

Today, The Woodlands is home to more than 1,650 guest rooms and 155,000 square feet of meeting and event space. It offers a unique destination where families can board kayaks on Lake Woodlands, dine on a Waterway Cruiser, enjoy a concert under the stars at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion or simply unwind in the restaurants, cafés and wine bars throughout The Woodlands Town Center. The Woodlands also presents more than 8 million square feet of shopping, dining, hospitality and entertainment, accessible by free trolley service or The Woodlands Waterway Cruisers.
