THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe is already at capacity. Approximately 20,000 unwanted pets are brought into the shelter every year. Literally twice as many animals come in on a daily basis than go out, and that ratio goes up drastically in summertime, which is right around the corner. Fortunately, there are a few community leaders in the county that have decided to participate in a year-long campaign to get as many of these pets adopted as possible.

The goal is to get 20,000 pet adoptions completed this year.

“While I have enjoyed working with the shelter and animal rescue groups for decades, I have longed to help publicize our homeless animal population,” said Nelda Luce Blair, founder of The Blair Law Firm in The Woodlands and leader with membership in several area community organizations. “My goal is to increase awareness all over the county with a year-long advertising and community outreach initiative and literally empty these cages.”

Bob Milner, co-owner of Mercedes Benz of The Woodlands, is another community leader with the heart – and the drive – to support the shelter and its inhabitants. “On average, over 100 animals are brought to the shelter every day, and less than 50 are adopted,” he said. “But this goes beyond simple mathematics. The animals confined to the shelter bring love and life and enjoyment to any household. My wife and I have our ‘two little girls’ – a Maltese and a Miniature Yorkie – and I couldn’t imagine what life would be without them.”

Both Blair and Milner are partaking in a twelve-month campaign, in conjunction with Donna Wick, President & CEO of Donna Wick Public Relations/Wicked Publicity, that showcases different animals each month. “We expect to get even more leaders in the Montgomery County business scene to take part in this initiative,” said Wick. “Whether you’re a dog person, or a cat person, or a lover of exotic animals, the Montgomery County Animal Shelter has a pet waiting to come home with you.”

Blair says that other participants have been vital to the campaign, such as Karla Lewis, owner of Picture Us Studio, who donated all photo shoots, and Rosanna Russell, who designed all graphic art for no cost.

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is open seven days a week and is located at 8535 Highway 242, just east of Interstate 45. For more information on the shelter or how to adopt or foster a pet, visit www.mcaspets.org.
