CONROE, Texas—The Conroe Independent School District board met Tuesday March 20. Here are the Top 5 things you need to know:

Superintendent

Superintendent Don Stockton stepped down and the finalist superintendent is Dr. Curtis Null. The board meeting was full of Conroe ISD members who were awaiting the announcement. When Null was announced, the entire room cheered and the board shared their enthusiasm.

"In the interview, you nailed it," Secretary Ray Sanders said. "I know we are going to have a superintendent who cares a lot. I’m very proud to call you the next superintendent."

As well as praising the new superintendent, the board also thanked Stockton for his support and said Null has "big shoes to fill."

The Woodlands High School Swim Team

The Woodlands High School swim team was recognized and praised for their excellence this year. Many parents showed up to watch their hardworking sons and daughters be commended and receive medals for their achievements. The boys were state champions with their 200-yard medley relay. They also broke five school records and set one state record.

The girls were awarded for their state champion 200-yard freestyle relay and they set new school records as well. Lucie Nordmann stood out for being the state champion for the 100-yard backstroke. Swim Coach Jeremy Wade was proud of his students.

Homeless child grant

A competitive grant for children depicted as homeless has been approved by the board. The competitive grant will offer $35,000 for three years of schooling. Last year, 475 students were qualified as homeless in the CISD area.

"I find it sad that kids need to worry about where to lay their head at night as well as going to school," said Secretary Ray Sanders.

Katherine Johnson Clark Intermediate School mascot and colors

The Katherine Johnson Clark Intermediate School will open in Spring this fall. They have chosen a cub as their mascot and school colors will be orange and blue. A survey sent to future students received more than 300 replies, showing they are all very excited to attend the new middle school.

New principal

Brian Lee is the new principal of York Junior High.

Lee began serving in Conroe ISD in 2009 as a social studies teacher and coach at Knox Junior High. He is currently an associate principal of administration at The Woodlands College Park High School.

Lee is filling the position previously held by Dr. Chris Povich who will be opening the new Grand Oaks High School in August of 2018.

"On behalf of myself and my family, we are honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve the Grand Oaks Community," Lee said. "We are excited to continue the outstanding work that was started by Dr. Povich and are committed to this work and look forward to the opportunity to work with the staff at York as well as with the other school staffs within the feeder.”
