THE WOODLANDS -- A car crashed into a Conroe ISD school bus carrying 35 people at 8:40 p.m. Friday night on the corner of Gosling and Research Forest with no major injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen GTI was speeding, according to witnesses who saw the crash unfold with their own eyes. “He swerved past us. I believe that if he didn’t hit the bus, he would have probably hit us.”

The driver was found on the floor by the first responders and put on a stretcher to be treated for any injuries.

The driver’s fiancée was in the passenger side. Her foot was hurt during the wreck, making her unable to walk on her own. “And as I saw the bus and I said ‘Delwin stop!’ and he tried to slam on his breaks and it was too late.”

Although alcohol was suspected to have played a part, it wasn’t until The Montgomery County Sherriff’s Department did a sobriety test on the driver that it was determined he was under the influence and then charged.

The passenger was also charged for having an open container in the car.

The Conroe ISD high schoolers had just finished a game in The Woodlands and were on their way to get food at McDonalds, which they were just feet away from when the accident occurred.

They were with the head coach, Coach Brown, who was taking matters very seriously, ensuring every student was accounted for and that they were okay.

Though there were no major injuries, all the volleyball players were shaken. They were not allowed to leave until their parents picked them up. Some even stayed as long as 10:30 p.m. waiting for their families.
