SPRING, TX -- Many viewed The Woodlands as a State title contender going into the playoffs. After splitting a scrappy doubleheader with Cy-Woods on Thursday, the Highlanders made it clear who the better team was on Friday with an 8-1 series-clinching win over the Wildcats.

In any sport, the good teams are ready to play right from the start. The Woodlands opened up Game 3 with five runs to put pressure on Cy-Woods right from the beginning. Will Swope and Luke Hammond started the party with a pair of RBI doubles to quickly jump out to a four-run lead. An RBI single from PJ Villareal added another run to essentially put the game away just as fast as it started.

In Game 2, Cy-Woods had a fast start of their own but allowed The Woodlands to make things interesting late. With Cam Caley on the mound in Game 3, there would be no comeback from the Wildcats.

Caley had Cy-Woods clueless in the batter’s box. He gave up just one run on two hits and struck out 15 batters in his outing of six and two-thirds innings. Cody Howard picked up the final strikeout to seal the deal and send the Highlanders into Round 3 of the UIL State Baseball Playoffs.

Offensively, The Woodlands had 10 hits on Friday night. Swope, Villareal, and Casey Sunseri led the way with two hits apiece.

The Woodlands will meet the winner of the Klein and Stony Point series in the Regional Quarterfinals. Location and game times to be announced.
