Houston Methodist - First Woodlands Hospital to get CPR Robot

THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital now uses a portable CPR-capable robot to give physicians an efficient and effective alternative to manual CPR, which can be lifesaving for cardiac patients.

“The LUCAS 3 device allows medical professionals to maintain high-quality CPR and adjust the rate, depth and timing of compressions to meet specific patient needs,” said Dr. Jason Knight, MD, MBA and chief medical officer at Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital.

LUCAS 3 fits patients of all sizes and is useful in a variety of medical emergency situations, including on the scene of an accident, during ambulance transport, in hospitals and in catheterization laboratories. In the hospital, the robot can administer chest compressions no matter what surface the patient is on, the height of the bed or the rescuer's physical strength. It can be used during heart procedures when it would be difficult for a caregiver to give compressions.

“The technology is easy to use and delivers high-quality, consistent compressions while simultaneously removing variability. This is a great tool to have on hand for our patients,” Knight said.

LUCAS 3 is designed to be used only by medical professionals, including first responders, ambulance personnel, nurses, physicians and medical staff who are CPR certified and have received specialized training in how to use the LUCAS device.
