Going out of doors in the daytime may not be enticing amidst this heat wave, but tonight’s cooler temperatures have something else to offer: some of the best stargazing of the year. Tonight is the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, one of the most prolific in the calendar year.

A fun fact — the Perseid shower is so named because it appears to originate within the constellation Perseus, of Greek mythological fame.

Meteors will be visible throughout the evening, but the height of the show will be between midnight and daybreak, when hundreds of meteors per hour can be seen flitting across the night sky. So brew that cup of coffee, turn out the lights, and join folks around the world in marveling at the beauty of the night sky.
