Montgomery County Animal Control Seizes Over 100 Cats

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX - On Wednesday October 2nd, 2019, Montgomery County Animal Control (“MCAC”) responded to a report of animal neglect at a residence in New Caney, Texas. Upon arrival, the animal control officer found numerous cats inside the home that was deemed unsafe for humans or pets to reside in. The officer also found seven dogs on the property in various states of poor health.

A civil seizure warrant was obtained and was served by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. As a result, MCAC seized 107 live cats, 7 live dogs and 1 parakeet. The animals were transported to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter (“MCAS”) for intake and veterinarian evaluations.

A hearing was held on October 9th, 2019 in the Justice of Peace Precinct 4 Court to determine custody of the animals. All 107 cats and 7 dogs were awarded to the custody of the MCAS. As a result of this extreme seizure, the numbers of cats at the MCAS has increased to 416 as of October 10th, 2019, well in excess of the shelter’s capacity. The Montgomery County Animal Shelter staff will continue to care for these animals along with the numerous intakes that come in on a daily basis. MCAS is requesting assistance from the community, including in the form of volunteers, fosters or by citizens adopting available animals until a final resolution is found for these seizure animals. Additional information will be forthcoming pending the appeal process.
