THE WOODLANDS, TX - Commissioner James Noack provides updates on road projects throughout Montgomery County.

Grogan’s Mill Road and South Millbend Drive
Intersection Project nears completion

Project update: Contractor Teamwork Construction Services has completed pavement work at the intersection. All dual-left-turn lanes are now open for use. The new traffic signal poles and signal heads have been installed. Over the next couple of weeks, Teamwork will be backfilling median areas, adding sod, placing final pavement markings and striping, as well as cleaning up the project site. The signal crews will continue installing wiring as well as pedestrian poles, and then remove the temporary poles and signals once the new signals are operational.

The project started at the end of September and is a 90-calendar day project.

Project Scope: This project creates additional turn-lane storage by constructing double turn lanes for traffic on:

1. Northbound Grogan’s Mill turning onto westbound South Millbend
2. Southbound Grogan’s Mill turning onto eastbound South Millbend
3. Eastbound South Millbend turning onto northbound Grogan’s Mill

In addition, right-turn-lane improvements were made throughout the intersection.
Signal locations have been redesigned for this project, which includes concrete median removal as well as additional pavement. The project required rerouting some intersection traffic during construction.

Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive Improvements east of Grand Parkway getting underway

Project Update: The Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive widening, intersection improvement and signalization project started at the end of October. D&W Contractors has made good progress on excavating the area for the two new eastbound lanes between Waterbend Cove and Birnham Woods Drive. D&W is preparing for its first concrete pour of the project. In addition, storm sewer inlet installation continues.

Scope of project: The project will widen Rayford Road to four lanes from approximately 40 feet east of Waterbend Cove to approximately 400 feet east of Birnham Woods Drive. A new concrete roadway will be constructed on the south side of the existing Rayford Road lanes to create the two new eastbound lanes. The existing road will be for the two westbound lanes along that stretch.

The construction includes an additional bridge for eastbound Rayford Road traffic just east of Spring Trails Park Drive.

The project also involves constructing a traffic signal at the Rayford Road-Birnham Woods intersection and widening Birnham Woods Drive to four lanes from approximately 600 feet north of Rayford Road to approximately 600 feet south of Rayford Road. All four Rayford Road-Birnham Woods Drive intersection approaches will have a dedicated left-turn lane.

Contract length: 360 calendar days

Kuykendahl Road widening project bid awarded

WadeCon LLC was awarded the bid for the Kuykendahl Road improvement project.

Scope of project: The project will widen Kuykendahl Road from a two-lane half boulevard to a four-lane full boulevard from Lake Woodlands Drive to Research Forest Drive. The project design includes construction of two 12-foot-wide northbound vehicle lanes from north of Lake Woodlands Drive to south of Bay Branch Drive with an 8-foot-wide outside shoulder along the new northbound lanes. There will be a new bridge constructed over Bear Branch for the northbound lanes that has a shoulder as well as a walkway, mirroring the existing bridge. The two existing lanes will become the southbound lanes once construction is completed.

Contract: The bid amount for project construction, which is a 365-calendar day contract, was $3,566,246. The project is expected to start in early 2021.

Rayford Road guard fence replacement

The section of the metal beam guard fence along the westbound Rayford Road curve by Legends Run and Fox Run that was damaged in a vehicle crash has been replaced and realigned with the new metal beam guard fence installed during the Rayford Road widening project along the road.

The replacement MBGF extends all the way to Legends Reach.
Recently damaged metal beam guard fence along the eastbound curve also will be repaired or replaced, as needed.

Flintridge Drive Sewer Line work

The Woodlands Water Agency is currently replacing approximately 200 feet of sewer line that runs parallel to the eastbound lane of Flintridge Drive between the George Mitchell Preserve access and Rush Haven Drive.

Traffic lanes were shifted to allow more work room along the shoulder but still enable two-way traffic through the work zone. This is not a Precinct 3 project.

Once the sewer line replacement is completed, sections of the eastbound lanes also will be replaced.

Striping improvements

Precinct 3 continues to restripe roads.

Recent restriping projects:
• Research Forest Drive (Grogan’s Mill Road to Kuykendahl Road) -- Nearing Completion

Crack seal projects
• Research Forest Drive (Grogan’s Mill Road to Kuykendahl Road) – Completed

More striping, crack seal and asphalt road repair/overlay projects across the precinct will continue.
