Service Sisterhood, a new volunteer group in The Woodlands, is Committed to Community

THE WOODLANDS, TX — “I don't think anybody has gone through life without needing the help of somebody else,” Said Carolyn Blakeman, Founder of Service Sisterhood, a new volunteer group that focuses solely on helping local charities within The Woodlands, Montgomery County, Spring, and Houston Area.

Service Sisterhood started last month, June 9, and has already gained over 70 members; a testament to the amount of giving hearts homed within our community. Their mission is simple: to help others and spread kindness.

What sets Service Sisterhood apart?
• There are no membership dues
• None of the money raised goes back into the group
• There are zero in-person meetings - instead, communication is flowed through their private Facebook page, with further discussions set to take place via zoom or a group phone call
• There are no elected officials - positions are filled by whoever would like to help

“I want this to be no pressure,” Carolyn said. “I want people to give because they want to give; when they can and how they can … just a group of women that want to give back and better our community.”

The group plans to carry out two volunteer activities each month, and though their ideas are just getting started, they’ve already collected needed supplies for the Montgomery County Women's Center.

Future plans include reading stories to children in local hospitals, Christmas caroling at retirement centers, and participating in the United in Purple 5k Walk this November, in benefit of the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation. An official events calendar is in the works, which will include sign-up sheets along with the number of volunteers needed.

Every Service Sisterhood member’s voice matters and all ages are welcome! The hope is for each person to suggest projects that are near to them.

“We have nurses, artists, accountants, a huge array of teachers, event planners … we’ve got all this talent that we can pull together and get creative on how to serve the community,” Carolyn said. “Everyone has a story, and everyone has a chance to help somebody else get through theirs.”

NOTE: A ‘twin’ group for men has also been created; Service Brotherhood, which will focus on coaching sports, supporting veterans, mentoring boys in need of guidance, helping men successfully prepare for job interviews, and tagging along at certain Service Sisterhood events to ensure the women volunteers are safe.
