THE WOODLANDS, TX – Serving in the military is a noble, honorable and many times, life-threatening venture. It requires a “can do” attitude and an unshakable determination to do what many people view as “too hard” or impossible. Serving our country requires a willingness and effort to risk what is most important in life to protect what is most important in life. It really is a selfless act. It attracts the bravest among us and those individuals that heed the call to serve are owed a debt of gratitude that we can never fully repay. When military personnel end their careers and begin a new life back home, they are faced with a difficult transition period. It is hard enough to translate a life in the military into a normal civilian life, but translating skillsets from the military into skillsets needed for the corporate world can be even harder. Many veterans are taking a financial leap of faith though and building successful businesses of their own. There are more veteran-owned businesses in The Woodlands area than you think and we want to highlight some of those amazing local veteran-owned companies and the men and women that run them. Jeff and Ruth Vargo are two such business owners. They own a remodeling company in The Woodlands called DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands. We sat down with Ruth Vargo to talk about her and her husband’s time in the military and their company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen.

Jeff and Ruth Vargo originally met while attending the Untied States Military Academy at West Point, New York. According to the West Point website, the school’s mission is 'to educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army.” During their freshman year, Ruth and Jeff were not sure what their commission would ultimately be. The tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001 forever changed that. During their sophomore year at the academy, terrorists would fulfill a mission of attacking the United States on US soil. It was known at school that once they graduated, they would possibly be sent to either Iraq or Afghanistan in support of the war on terrorism. They graduated from West Point in 2004 and right out of the gate, Jeff was sent to Iraq for a year. Ruth was stationed in Germany at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. This was a major medical hub from which people came from Iraq, Afghanistan and other Middle Eastern areas.

Jeff and Ruth got married in 2005 and when Jeff was deployed to Iraq a second time, Ruth decided to volunteer to go with him. The rotation was normally a year off and a year back in the Middle East. They didn’t want to be apart for an entire year, so they both decided to go back together. Jeff was in light infantry at the time and Ruth was in the medical service arena, helping to manage casualties. Both Jeff and Ruth loved being in the military. They enjoyed their time in the military and felt it was an honor to serve their country. After being in the army for 6 years, they wanted to start a family, so they started the process of transitioning out of the military and into civilian life. This was a struggle at first. The way people talked and normal routines changes dramatically from what they knew in the military. They used a headhunting company called Cameron-Brooks to help them find jobs in Corporate America. According to Cameron-Brooks, for over 45 years, they have been successfully introducing America’s top companies to our military’s most elite junior officers. They help junior military officers locate corporate positions and navigate the interview process.

Through Cameron-Brooks, both Jeff and Ruth were able to secure project management positions at ExxonMobil. They worked at ExxonMobil for 11 years and Ruth mentioned that they both enjoyed their jobs. They were part of some pretty incredible projects and were blessed to travel to various places around the world. After Covid hit though, and with the new environment that the oil and gas industry was facing, Jeff decided to look at opportunities to own their own business.

Jeff had pursued some jobs with residential and commercial builders but the oil and gas skills were hard to translate into other fields. Ruth and Jeff ended up stumbling across a headhunter for franchises. They didn’t even know that that type of service existed. But it does. Franchise headhunters have access to hundreds of franchise opportunities and give you a personality test of sorts to help connect you with the best franchise opportunity. After being assessed by The Entrepreneur Authority (eAuth.com), Jeff was presented with 10 franchise opportunities. Jeff narrowed the list down to one opportunity; he chose DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen because it was a faith-based organization and it focused on residential remodeling, which are two of his life passions. They met with corporate headquarters staff in Waco, Texas, as well as other franchisees. After months of learning more about the company and meeting with various people, they felt that God was telling them that this was the right franchise to choose. They ended up making the decision to become a franchisee of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen and opened their business in May 2021.
