Lone Star College students rope in scholarships

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is more than just cowboys, music and a fun-filled midway. Rodeo Houston also awards more than 800 scholarships to Texas students each year, including 18 Lone Star College students this year.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship was very helpful in my education path,” said Halee Chance, LSC-Tomball student. “Fortunately, Lone Star College-Tomball is close to home and will help me to achieve my goal of being a licensed veterinary technician.”

Chance is one of six LSC-Tomball Veterinary Technology students who were awarded a scholarship through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Endowment. In all, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials awarded several Houston-area community colleges and technical institutions with $200,000 in Vocational Scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year.

“The Rodeo understands the significant demand for vocational skills in today’s environment and we are committed to supporting these students as they pursue a nontraditional education,” said Chris Boleman, Rodeo President and CEO in a statement. “These schools offer vocational and trade school programs that will help students develop the technical skills and training needed to stay competitive in specialized fields.”

In addition to the six LSC Veterinary Technology students awarded scholarships, 12 additional LSC students studying Electrical Technology, Industrial Diesel, Mechatronics, Process Technology and Welding also received financial assistance from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

“Getting a Houston Live Stock Show & Rodeo has broadened my thoughts on what I want to do after the Vet Tech program,” said Jeff Gruber, LSC-Tomball student. “I had originally thought to pursue companion animal medicine but after the scholarship, I have researched and have become more interested in large animal/food animal careers.”

The two-year LSC Veterinary Technology program provides students with information, skills and experience they will need to follow a fulfilling career in a veterinary hospital, a zoological garden, veterinary industry, a medical research laboratory, a governmental regulatory program or the Veterinary Medical Corp. “Receiving a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship really helped me save money that would have been used toward my tuition and resources for school,” said Melany Aguirre, LSC-Tomball student. “When I finish my studies for a licensed veterinary technician, I would like to continue my education to get my bachelor’s degree.”
