Lone Star College students named semifinalists for prestigious scholarship

HOUSTON, TX -- The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation (JKCF) announced 19 Lone Star College students were recognized as semifinalists for its highly competitive Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Finalists who will complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities receive up to $55,000 per year for up to three years to cover a substantial share of educational expenses including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees.

“Lone Star College continues to redefine the community college experience,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC Chancellor. “The semifinalists selected are enrolled in the Lone Star Honors College which meets the needs of high-achieving students who are looking to improve their college transcripts and transferability with challenging coursework.”

Finalists will also receive all-inclusive educational advising from JKCF staff to guide them through the processes of transitioning to a four-year school and preparing them for their careers.

“The past year has been particularly difficult as students continued to navigate the complexities of hybrid learning, the demands of family care, and disrupted work schedules,” said Seppy Basili, executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation in a statement. “We are so proud of these semifinalists for their perseverance and achievements at their community colleges.”

This year’s 440 semifinalists were chosen from a pool of more than 1,200 applicants attending 180 community colleges in 35 states. The Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship recipients will be announced in early May. In all, 26 LSC students have been awarded the Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship since 2012.
