HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College students recently participated in the Research Experiences for Undergrads program at Rice University. The program provides research experiences for undergraduates and is open to students at colleges and universities from around the world.

Ivey Adara Knebel, LSC Honors graduate presented her research project “Investigating how the Arabidopsis PEX11 Family Impacts Peroxisome Intralumenal Vesicle (ILV) Formation” during a recent a capstone research poster symposium held at Rice University.

“The Honors College at Lone Star College is a hidden gem,” said Knebel. “I have had the opportunity to study abroad, present at research conferences at the local and regional level and learn from the perspectives of my peers.”

Knebel graduated from LSC-CyFair with an Honors Associate of Science degree and Leadership Track Distinction last spring. Knebel was awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship and will continue her education by transferring to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center this fall.

Other LSC students who participated in the symposium were Angelica Penaloza, Bella Pianezzola, Angela Pinon, Etienne Ndem, Katherine Dullen, Andrew Bierbower and Vincenzo De Vita Sifontes.

The LSC Honors College helps meet the needs of high-achieving students looking to enhance their college transcripts with challenging coursework provided across a broad range of disciplines. Courses are designed to engage and test students inside and outside the classroom with small classes and close interaction alongside dedicated faculty.

“We are so proud of all the Lone Star College students who took part in this very exciting program,” said Katharine Caruso, Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor, Honors and International Education. “Participating in the Research Experiences for Undergrads program at Rice University will provide a solid learning foundation as they continue on their educational journey.”

“I am pursuing a career as a forensic geneticist in tandem with a career in researching women’s genetics and reproductive health,” said Knebel. “I want to intermingle my love for science with activism. Whatever career I end up in, I will be sure to do just that.”

The symposium is the culminating experience for LSC Honors College Stem Scholars participating in the Rice University Take Flight program which is a partnership between Rice and LSC to expand education access and increase the number of students who complete STEM degrees.
