HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College is taking another step into the future thanks to a partnership with Hertz Car Rental and the city of Houston.

Hertz donated a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt (electric vehicle) and will provide educational and training opportunities to LSC-North Harris students, expanding the college’s Automotive Technology Department. Incorporating this innovative feature into the existing college program will provide LSC students with the latest, firsthand training to successfully prepare them for entry into the ever-changing automotive industry.

“Lone Star College-North Harris offers one of the top automotive programs in the state, and we are proud that Hertz and the city of Houston chose us to educate and train the next group of skilled workers in this industry,” said Archie L. Blanson, Ph.D., LSC-North Harris President. “We are committed to ensuring that our students stay competitive to meet the needs of the automotive industry, including bringing the latest technologies and an electric vehicle fleet into the classroom.”

The Chevrolet Bolt is not LSC-North Harris’s first electric vehicle. The Automotive Technology Program received a 2018 Nissan Leaf in spring 2020. The college has more than 20 cars (EV and gas) in its fleet, providing students with the hands-on education and training to enter and navigate the ever-changing transportation industry successfully.

“We (Hertz) look forward to working with the city of Houston, Lone Star College-North Harris and other organizations to expand the benefits of electrification in the Houston community, said Stephen Scherr, Hertz Chair and CEO in a statement.

This initiative is part of Hertz Electrifies Houston which will also expand the availability of electric vehicles in the city for leisure and business customers and rideshare drivers. In partnership with bp pulse, Hertz will help build a large electric vehicle charging station at Hobby Airport.

“I am thankful to Hertz for their commitment to do its part to electrify Houston, as well as to bp pulse and Lone Star College for their participation in this partnership,” said Sylvester Turner, City of Houston Mayor, via a tweet. “I am excited to see these new electric vehicles on our streets and this new fast-charging hub at Hobby Airport.”

The Automotive Technology Program at LSC-North Harris offers academic and technical education and training to assist students entering the automotive services industry. Students learn the mechanical, electrical/electronic and environmental systems of the contemporary automobile and light truck.
