THE WOODLANDS, TX -- On April 17th, 2023, The Woodlands Christian Academy's Engineering Applications in Earth and Space classes successfully launched two weather balloons from Warrior Stadium into the mid upper stratosphere. Equipped with cameras, temperature and pressure sensors, and a sensitive GPS, the balloons were able to capture data and track their payload for recovery after landing in Beaumont. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the launch by making official notices to airmen so that all air traffic would be informed and stay clear of the balloon's path.
The mid-upper stratosphere is the second layer of the atmosphere and is higher than where planes fly and weather occurs. The balloons traveled to this altitude, giving the students a unique opportunity to explore this part of our planet's atmosphere.
According to teacher Pam Masau, “The students were engaged in prepping and testing their subsystems. They were excited since the success would depend on the their work. There was a sense of pride among the students upon seeing the photos and data collected.”
Students are now analyzing the graphs of temperature and pressure data collected by the balloons to determine the exact altitude achieved. This activity not only allowed students to apply their engineering knowledge but also taught them the value of teamwork, planning, and problem-solving.
Woodlands Christian is committed to providing students with hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that challenge them to think critically and creatively. The successful launch of these weather balloons is just one example of the exciting activities that take place at Woodlands Christian and fosters a love for learning. The school offers a rigorous academic program with college preparation starting in 8th grade and SAT/ACT test prep for 9th-11th grade. One hundred percent of graduating seniors are admitted to colleges or universities. Woodlands Christian is now enrolling grades PreK - 12th for the 2023-2024 school year.
