HOUSTON, TX -- Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) will present a panel discussion, "Freedoms Promised," on the LSC-University Park campus for Constitution Day, September 14, 2023, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Building 13, Room 210. "Freedoms Promised' features a panel discussion with an overview of the United States Constitution by Bryan Henry, a Civic Engagement Fellow and professor of political science.

The panel will then discuss the freedoms of speech outlined in the First Amendment and the implications for the teaching and learning community.

"The promised freedoms in the Constitution's First Amendment, including the freedom to read and the freedom of speech, provide the foundation for informed citizenship. These freedoms are intrinsically linked to our right to education and ability to be good citizens," said Shannon Bennett Hausinger, Ed.D., LSC-University Park Library Director.

Among the panelists will be Texas Education Agency Board Member Staci Childs, Jermaine Johnson, professor of criminology at LSC-University Park, and Dorcas Hand, library advocate and co-chair of Students Need Libraries in the Houston Independent School District (HISD). An all-American lunch of hotdogs, and apple pie will follow the panel discussion.

No tickets are needed, but seating is limited.

The “Freedoms Promised” event is a component of this year’s Learn More Event Series, which is themed “Censored Lives.” The series, usually hosting one event each semester, aims to spotlight and raise awareness about types of censorship and exclusion.

September 17 is Constitution Day. This day commemorates the September 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution.
