Lone Star College-Tomball student receives the Barry Goldwater Scholarship

TOMBALL, TX -- The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Foundation provides opportunities to college students interested in research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering fields. The foundation named Alexis Lopez, a Lone Star College-Tomball Honors College student, a recipient of the prestigious scholarship.

“Historically, Barry Goldwater Scholarship winners are from elite four-year research institutions with only a handful attending community colleges,” said Brian Kyser, LSC Honors College executive director and faculty chair and LSC representative to the Barry Goldwater Scholarship. “Alexis is a stellar example of how community colleges’ programming can set students up for national success. Her fearless and persistent nature led her to apply for other exclusive and hard-to-earn opportunities, preparing her to earn this prestigious scholarship.”

Lopez believes a good education leads to personal development, career opportunities and economic growth. Building on that belief, she applied for the Barry Goldwater Scholarship to further explore her passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research. The LSC Honors College student will receive $7,500 to complete a bachelor’s degree.

“I am excited to be one of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship recipients and hope this incredible opportunity will open doors to networking with other high-achieving students, professionals and researchers,” said Lopez. “I’m grateful this scholarship will help cover my tuition and provide a community of like-minded scholars.”

Lopez will graduate from LSC-Tomball in May with an Honors Associate of Science degree and intern with Lockheed Martin over the summer. She hopes to attend Rice University in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Lopez’s future goals include earning a graduate degree and becoming an industry researcher for an aerospace company.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, established in 1986, awarded 438 scholarships to college students across the United States for the 2024-2025 academic year. Lopez was one of four LSC Honors College students who received a nomination for the prestigious scholarship. Other entrants were Jocel Angelo Reyes and Anastasia Walker, LSC-Tomball and Carlos Carreon, LSC-Kingwood.
