THE WOODLANDS, TX – Recently, it was announced that Dr. Curtis Null, who assumed the mantle of superintendent for the Conroe Independent School District in 2018 with a total of 23 years with the district, had emerged as the lone finalist for the search for new superintendent of Lake Travis Independent School District.

Null, who was recognized as one of the Houston Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs just last year, is in the middle of the mandated 21-day waiting period before officially accepting the position and moving away from his Montgomery County home of the past few decades.

Currently, there are approximately a dozen individuals undergoing the application process to replace Null at Conroe ISD’s top office; and two people have been announced as possibilities for interim superintendent until final decisions can be made.

Woodlands Online recently had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Null and get his thoughts as he prepares to assume his new position in the northwest Austin area.

How did the new job offer come about? Were you contacted, or were you the one reaching out?

Like in any profession, there are search firms and folks that will call out seeking candidates, and my wife and I are at a time in our life where our children have both graduated college and are out of the house and we’re empty nesters, and it was just an opportunity that presented itself and we thought Hey, now may be the right time to consider it.

Montgomery County has been your home for many, many years. How will it feel moving to the Lake Travios / Austin area?

For us, Lake Travis is an area that does hold special meaning in our family. Actually, I asked my wife to marry me in a boat in the middle of Lake Travis almost thirty years ago. So it is a place that touches our heart a little bit, and that fact played a factor as well.

What kind of legacy do you feel you’ll be leaving behind? Is there anything in particular you’d like to be remembered for in regards to your tenure as superintendent?

These jobs are hard. There are lots of different challenges, you know. I think what I’m most proud of is the success of our students and teachers. I think the reality for me is, I did navigate through some difficult times for us, be it COVID being number one, then floods and hurricanes and freezes and bond elections, and all these things.

Ultimately, I just hope that I’m remembered as somebody who truly cared for every kid, for every staff member, and for our community, and was proud to be a part of the community and hope the community was proud to be a part of me as their superintendent.

What words would you like to leave for your replacement as they assume your duties in the near future?

This is a wonderful place, and whoever gets the opportunity to lead this school district will be truly blessed. It’s an outstanding community here. Everybody here believes in and supports Conroe ISD. And I will be a resource in any way that I can from a few hundred miles away, and will continue to be one of the greatest cheerleaders for the Conroe Independent School District moving forward.
