CONROE, TX -- The City of Conroe’s Emergency Management team, in collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Department, hosted a groundbreaking Afterschool Disaster Preparedness Program on May 1, 2024. This initiative, which marks a significant step in our community's preparedness, aims to involve children in understanding their environment and actively participating in disaster preparedness at home and in their communities.

“As hurricane season approaches, now is the time to prepare. Disasters affect everyone, even our children. We hope that by making this information available to them, we will be a safer community.” Ken Kreger, Fire Chief | Emergency Management Coordinator.

There are approximately 500 children in the Conroe Parks and Recreation Afterschool Program. Each child received a disaster preparedness drawstring tote bag filled with preparedness items and educational material.

Our vision is for this program to become an annual tradition, with the active involvement of local businesses and families. We firmly believe that it is through a united community effort that we can truly be prepared when disaster strikes. We invite everyone to join us in this endeavor.

Conroe Emergency Management would like to thank the following sponsors for their donations:

San Jacinto River Authority; Kelsey-Seybold, Conroe; U.S. Rubber Corp.; Hampton Inn & Suites; Conroe Dental Health; Stone Ridge Veterinary Medical Center and Pet Resort; Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); Seventh Day Adventist Disaster Response, Keene, TX; and Houston/Galveston NOAA
