Woodlands Weekend Weather and Events – July 11 - 13 – Road trips bad, staying here good

THE WOODLANDS, TX – The low dew point, high humidity, and generally rising pressure system this weekend will combine to contrive a wet weekend with cooler than normal temperatures. While each day of the weekend will probably receive some form of precipitation, the rains will be brief and relatively light. Outside of the immediate area, however, it’s possibly a more dangerous story.
As the Friday afternoon progresses, we’ll get another spate of thundershowers, grey and rumbly but relatively benign. By bedtime, we’ll already be in the 70s for our overnight low, turning around at about daybreak tomorrow to rise back into the upper 80s, with another ten degrees or so added to the heat index.
Early afternoon on Saturday we’ll get another round of thunderstorms, dropping about two-tenths of an inch on the area. Again, enough to hamper some outdoor plans but nothing remotely resembling flood conditions. With the storms will come another precipitous drop in the temperature. Overnight, the stars will be pretty much blotted out by cloud cover, but the daytime winds will be stilled.
On Sunday, the storm pattern will repeat itself with an early afternoon round of thunder, lighting, and rain, with about half the precipitation of the day before. Once again, though it’s unlikely we’ll get out of the 80s for the high, the heat index will make it feel closer to 100 degrees. As you slumber that night, the overcast skies will slowly clear up, so that you can expect to wake up to a much brighter Monday.
In summary, staying local would be your best bet this weekend, a perfect time to hit some retail outlets or entertainment venues or restaurants. For instance, tonight you and the crew can enjoy Family Bingo Night, hosted by The Woodlands Township at Rob Fleming Recreation Center. Saturday you might want to take the little ones to The Woodlands Children’s Museum’s 15th birthday party. Or, on Sunday, consider adding to your family by adopting a furry loved one at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter’s ‘Dog Days of Summer’ event.
While the Township and immediate areas may be inconvenienced by a little bit of wet and grey, north of us, however, we may have a continuation of the floods that wracked the area last week. In light of the severity and fatalities associated with that weather, we strongly urge caution should you expect to take a road trip away from The Woodlands this weekend.
This weekend, much of North and Central Texas has an increased risk of flash flooding due to rain chances, according to the National Weather Service. Specifically, the NWS’ Weather Prediction Center has placed much of the area under a Level 2 (out of 4) risk, or at least a 15% chance, of flash flooding on Saturday. While severe weather is unlikely, some stronger storms could produce gusty winds.
Areas like Kerrville and Hunt have a slightly lower risk, but much of North and West Texas, as well as the Panhandle, are at a higher risk. In the Houston area, while not included in the overall flood risk, localized flooding is possible due to afternoon storms on Saturday and Sunday.
