Oak Ridge and Conroe Look For Another District Win to Add To Their Resumes

CONROE -- This Thursday, the Conroe Tigers will face the Oak Ridge War Eagles at Woodforest Bank Stadium. Both teams are entering this game hoping to build on their district wins against New Caney. Conroe has had a week of rest since their last game against New Caney on September 19, while Oak Ridge also comes off a close win against the same New Caney team. Both teams have talented players on both sides, and it promises to be another exciting district game.
Oak Ridge War Eagles: Some Close Calls So Far
This season has been an interesting one for Oak Ridge, as they have had some close wins but also some blowouts. Coming in with a 3-2 record, the War Eagles have played well against opponents like Stratford and New Caney, where they fought hard and showcased resilience. In last week's game, QB Drayton Urbay demonstrated why he is the leader of this team, throwing for 121 yards and a touchdown, as well as rushing for 203 yards and 2 touchdowns. These combined 324 total yards of offense for Urbay were a major factor in Oak Ridge’s victory over New Caney, and he will look to maintain his strong performance in this game. WR James Scott is another player to watch, as he caught 6 passes for 82 yards last game. He is one of Urbay’s favorite targets and has been a vital option in the passing game so far. The defense will need to step up this week, as they have allowed many points this season and, aside from their game against Cleveland, have given up over 25 points in each of their other games. Conroe has a strong run game and is also effective in the passing attack, so we’ll see if the War Eagles’ defense can come through and keep them in check.
Conroe Tigers: 2 Weeks of Prep
After a solid win over New Caney in Week 4, Conroe had a week off to prepare for this game against Oak Ridge. The Tigers have had a great start to the season; aside from their game against College Park, their offense has been efficient, scoring at least 20 points in 3 of the last 4 games. Leading this effort is RB Alex Spence Myers, who has over 420 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns through 4 games. Spence Myers has also added over 100 yards in the passing game, showing he can be an elite option for the offense when they need points. QB Cameron Nunley hasn’t been too bad either, passing for 757 yards and 5 touchdowns with a 61% completion rate. However, Nunley has thrown 3 interceptions this season, so he will need to protect the ball better if he wants to put his team in a position to win. On the receiving end, WR Elijah Harris leads the team with 309 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defense has also been solid, recording a shutout against Alief Hastings and limiting College Park to their lowest point total of the year. They have combined for 11 sacks and forced 6 fumbles, helping to limit opponents' ability to move the ball down the field. They will need this defense to perform well against a fiery Oak Ridge team, and for the offense to stay sharp after their bye week.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, both teams enter this game quite similar, as they both have identical win totals. While they aren’t powerhouses like College Park or Willis, they can still compete and play strong football. Expect Conroe to come out of the gate flying after their week of rest, with Alex Spence Myers likely to be a key player. For Oak Ridge, if their defense steps up, Drayton Urbay should have a great game for the War Eagles. It promises to be an exciting matchup and could be a deciding factor in which team manages to make it into the playoff conversation.
