THE WOODLANDS, TX -- The air at St. Luke's Health-The Woodlands Hospital glitters with more than just sterile cleanliness each holiday season. For nearly a decade, the hospital has been transforming its halls into a wonderland of decorated Christmas trees, not just for staff and patients to enjoy, but as a beacon of hope and generosity for the wider community.

This heartwarming initiative, spearheaded by Emergency Department Manager Toni Rogers alongside the Professional Engagement Council, and sponsored by Entergy, has become an integral part of the hospital's culture, embodying their commitment to humankindness beyond the walls of patient care.

What began in 2016 from a place of childhood longing has blossomed into an anticipated annual event. Toni Rogers, reflecting on her inspiration, shared, “Everyone deserves to feel the magic of Christmas. I once went without anything at Christmas during my childhood, and it simply doesn’t take much to make a difference in the lives of others.” This profound belief fuels the entire program, which aims to “bring love in from other people” and emulate the core values of the institution.

Each year, approximately 50 departments enthusiastically participate. Given a tree, teams dedicate two weeks to decorating, often with elaborate and creative themes ranging from "Paw Patrol" and "Minecraft" to "Hot Wheels," "Barbie," and even the "Houston Astros." These festive creations are then showcased for another two weeks, transforming the hospital lobby into a vibrant, festive forest.

But the true magic lies in the trees' final destination. They are not merely decorations; they are gifts. Partnering with respected community organizations like Interfaith of The Woodlands, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Northwest Assistance Ministries, and St. Vincent De Paul, the hospital ensures these beautifully adorned trees find homes with families and congregations in need.

Beyond external partnerships, the initiative also extends its generosity internally. Specific trees are designated for staff members facing challenges, coordinated through Spiritual Care, or for patient families identified by departments like Labor and Delivery. This deeply personal touch ensures the spirit of giving touches every corner of the St. Luke's-The Woodlands community.

The entire endeavor is a testament to staff dedication. “It’s entirely staff driven,” explains Toni. “The voting process, with 25 cents per vote, helps us cover costs for future years, and we even auction off a tree of the buyer’s choice.”

The support from hospital leadership is equally extraordinary. Jim Parisi, Hospital President, enthusiastically affirms, “The Christmas tree display is truly a magical experience that everyone looks forward to. It’s an incredible testament to the boundless generosity and collaborative spirit of our staff.”

For Toni, leading this initiative is a deeply rewarding experience. “It pulls your department together during the holiday season – that magic of collaboration and partnership that is supporting a bigger cause,” she says, her voice resonating with pride. “When you put them all together in the lobby, it’s an overwhelmingly beautiful spirit. You realize giving is what it’s all about – giving of yourself, your team, your facility, and making an impact in the community.”

This annual display is more than just holiday cheer; it's a powerful embodiment of the hospital’s unwavering commitment to humankindness. As Toni eloquently states, it showcases that “beyond providing patient care – we care about you as a person, we care about your family, we care about our community. We bring the healing presence of God to the underserved – bringing our mission to life.”

The St. Luke's Health-The Woodlands Hospital Christmas tree display stands as a heartwarming example of how a community can come together to spread joy and make a tangible difference in the lives of others, one beautifully decorated tree at a time. The spirit of giving flourishes within these walls, making the holiday season truly special for all.
