Bathroom Ventilation Fan Fire Quickly Extinguished; No Injuries Reported
THE WOODLANDS, TX -- Just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening, fire dispatch received an unusual call reporting a toilet on fire inside a residence. Dispatch promptly alerted fire units, flushing them from their stations to respond.
Engine 107 arrived on scene first and reported light smoke showing from the home. Firefighters made entry and discovered that a bathroom ventilation fan had caught fire. Flaming debris from the fan fell onto the toilet below, igniting it as well.
Crews quickly extinguished both fires, checked for extension to ensure the fire had not spread beyond the bathroom, and ventilated the structure to remove smoke.
There were no reported injuries. Fire damage was confined to the bathroom.
Bathroom ventilation fan fires are not uncommon and are typically caused by three major issues:
-
Faulty wiring
-
Running the fan for extended periods of time
-
Failure to properly clean and maintain the unit
Accumulated dust, lint, and debris inside exhaust fans can cause overheating and pose a significant fire risk.
The Woodlands Fire Department reminds residents to routinely inspect and clean bathroom ventilation fans and ensure proper installation and maintenance to reduce the risk of fire.
