HOUSTON, TX -- Michael “Mike” Stoma’s connection to Lone Star College System dates back to the beginning. In 1975, he was among its first students when classes were held at Aldine High School. Today, he is serving his second six-year term on the LSCS Board of Trustees.

“I have a long history with the college—not only as a student but as an instructor,” Stoma said. “My children attended, I have long-time friends who work there, and I’ve worked closely with nearly every chancellor over the years. There are a lot of things that tie me to the college system, which I think is the best in Texas.”

After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Stoma attended what was then known as North Harris County College, where he would later teach electronics engineering technology. He was also a founding member of the college system’s American Federation of Teachers chapter.

Stoma holds a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of St. Thomas. He has gone on to earn Master of Science certifications in project management and business process management from the University of Illinois, Springfield, and his professional credentials include Professional Project Manager, Agile Project Leader, Scrum Product Owner, Scrum Master, DevOps Professional, and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

With decades of experience in business and technological consulting, Stoma’s list of credentials continues to grow as technology advances.

“I continue to educate myself because technology changes on a minute-by-minute basis,” he said. “With the AI revolution going on, if you’re not up with it, you’re falling behind.”

In 2018, Stoma decided to run for the LSCS Board of Trustees to advocate for taxpayers and students. He also prioritizes transparency and ensuring the system’s revenue is well spent.

When engaging with constituents in his district, which includes LSC-CyFair, people have “nothing but good things to say” about the college.

“Homeowners want a reduction in taxes and an increase in their homestead exemptions. I’ve gotten that done twice now because of my efforts in championing that before the board,” Stoma said. “Right now, if you look at the tuition our students pay, it’s really a good deal. What people pay for an education through Lone Star College System is a great value.”
