Entergy Texas breaks ground on Legend and Lone Star power stations
PORT ARTHUR, TX -- Texas is growing fast, and its energy needs are growing even faster. To help meet that demand, leaders from Entergy Texas joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott, local officials and community leaders to break ground on Legend and Lone Star power stations, two major generation projects that will help power the region’s expanding population and economy.
Together, the highly efficient natural gas facilities will add more than 1,200 megawatts of reliable generation capacity—producing electricity that’s capable of powering more than 300,000 homes. Both plants were approved by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, or PUCT, in 2025 and are expected to begin serving customers in 2028.
Investing ahead of Southeast Texas growth
Texas has led the nation in population growth in recent years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and Southeast Texas is experiencing that momentum firsthand as new residents, industries and economic development projects continue to move into the region. To stay ahead of rising demand, Entergy Texas is investing in new infrastructure through its Southeast Texas Energy Plan, also known as STEP Ahead.
Legend and Lone Star power stations are the latest major projects advancing this comprehensive strategy to expand power generation, strengthen reliability and help keep electricity affordable for customers. The two new generation resources are expected to deliver over $280 million in customer benefits, including approx. $41 million in fuel savings for the first full year of operation.
Including the Orange County Advanced Power Station, which is scheduled to begin operating later this year, Entergy Texas plans to add more than 2.4 gigawatts of new generation capacity by 2028. As the region continues to grow, the company is investing in a modern, resilient energy future to power new homes, businesses and industries. Through its STEP Ahead plan, the company is planning years ahead to ensure it can continue delivering reliable and affordable electricity for its customers and communities.
Supporting jobs and economic development
Investments in reliable power are critical to attracting new businesses and supporting the region’s major industrial employers, which rely on consistent electricity to operate safely and efficiently. Beyond strengthening the power grid, Legend and Lone Star power stations will deliver significant economic benefits across Southeast Texas. Combined, construction of the two facilities is expected to generate approx. $2.7 billion in economic activity and create more than 9,000 construction jobs across the Port Arthur and Cleveland areas.
