America’s ER & Urgent Care is on standby to tackle fireworks injuries this weekend
THE WOODLANDS, TX – Though personal fireworks are prohibited in The Woodlands by Township ordinance, there are plenty of opportunities in outlying areas to set them off legally and with impunity. A reminder, however; Texas law prohibits igniting fireworks within 600 feet of schools, hospitals, or churches without permission, and using them near flammable materials or from vehicles.
Unfortunately, with fireworks come firework-related injuries and other damages. One family this week has already been rendered homeless due to still-active discarded fireworks burning down their house in the east side of the county, and that was simply in celebration of a soccer match, not the looming Independence Day Weekend.
Injuries are heavily concentrated in July, with July 4th alone accounting for approximately 28% of annual cases. Sparklers are a major contributor, causing an estimated 1,700 ER-treated injuries in 2024. While injuries spiked during the pandemic lockdowns in 2020, they have generally trended upward since 2008, with a notable surge in 2024.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission reported an estimated 14,700 firework-related injuries and 11 deaths in 2024, marking a sharp increase from previous years. Adults aged 25 to 44 accounted for the largest share of injuries (32%), followed by those aged 15 - 24 (24%). The most frequently injured body parts were hands and fingers (36%) and head, face, and ears (22%), with burns being the most common injury type (37% of ER visits). Texas alone averages 900 firework injuries per year, with burns being the most common injury type, particularly affecting the hands, fingers, eyes, and face.
Misuse and malfunction are the leading causes; sparklers are a significant hazard, burning at around 2,000°F and causing numerous burns, while firecrackers and rockets also contribute heavily to ER visits.
One such facility is already prepared for an influx of injured patients over the extended holiday weekend. The staff at America’s ER & Urgent Care in The Woodlands is hoping they won’t be needed, but are ready – in case they are – to handle all types of emergencies stemming from firework mishandling. This particular facility is unique in that it is both a freestanding emergency room and a fully equipped urgent care center.
The primary difference between a standalone emergency room and urgent care lies in the severity of conditions treated, available resources, and cost. Standalone emergency rooms are licensed facilities that provide 24/7 comprehensive emergency care, including advanced imaging (CT, MRI, X-ray) and stabilization for life-threatening conditions. Urgent care centers are designed for non-life-threatening, time-sensitive issues (like minor fractures, infections, or sprains), and offer lower costs due to not needing the advanced diagnostic and surgical capabilities of an ER.
America’s ER & Urgent Care Center is qualified to handle the needs of both types of medical facility. Whether your firework injury is only semi-severe such as a hand burn, or life-threatening, the medical staff available day and night can treat it completely on-site, or get you over the initial crisis and ready for transport to a hospital.
So, keep in mind America’s ER & Urgent Care for a full suite of care should your holiday revelries turn tragic. The clinic is located at 32784 FM 2978 at Research Forest in the Magnolia side of the western Woodlands, and their phone number is 281-789-3400.
