Golf: The Woodlands starts year right

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Woodlands High School boys and girls golf teams are back in action after starting the New Year with victories.

The Woodlands boys’ team plays Monday, Feb. 4, in the Oak Ridge Invitational at River Plantation while the Lady Highlanders play in the Oak Ridge Invitational on Monday, Feb. 11, at River Plantation.

The New Year began with the defending state champion Highlanders repeating as champions of the Vern Edwards Memorial Golf hosted by The Woodlands High School on the Tournament and Gary Player courses of The Woodlands Country Club on Jan. 21-22.

Junior Chester Wang led the way with a 148 (74-74). Fernando Cruz (75-76 – 151)), Carter Patterson (75-77 - 152), Brad Able (78-81 - 159), and Diego Trevino (84-78 -162) also contributed to the team’s two day total 607 (302-305).

The Lady Highlanders began the New Year by capturing the Vern Edwards Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by The Woodlands High School at The Woodlands Resort Oaks and Panther Trails courses on Jan. 21-22.

Sophomore Brooke McDougald led the way with a 2-under 142 (70-72) to capture individual honors as well. Kelly McGovern ( 71-75 - 145) earned bronze medalist honors while Greta Bruner (75-75 - 150), Ashlynn Novak (81-76 -- 157), and Allie Andersen (80-84 - 164) contributed to the two-day total 594 (296-298).
