Golf: The Woodlands boys fifth at state

The Woodlands High School boys’ golf team placed fifth at the UIL Class 5A State Tournament. The two-day event finished up on Tuesday at the Morris Williams Golf Course in Austin.

Lake Travis High School won the team title with a score of 571 (294-277). Mansfield was second (576) followed by Southlake Carroll (582) and San Antonio Reagan (584).

The Highlanders rounded out the top five teams with a two-day total 585 (300-285). Brad Able led the way with a 139 (73-66). He was one of three players who finished in a tie for second place, just one stroke behind state champion Andrew Paysse, of Belton (67-71 – 138).

Able finished third in the playoff, when he made par on the third playoff hole.

Highlanders Carter Patterson (78-71) and Chester Wang (72-77) finished with identical scores of 149 while Fernando Cruz carded a 151 (80-71) and Diego Trevino shot a 156 (77-79).

On the girls’ side, The Woodlands High School medalists Brooke McDougald (72-76) and Kelly McGovern (74-74) tied for 11th place with identical scores of 148.

Lake Travis completed a sweep of the state tournament when it also took the girls’ team title with a score of 598 (299-299).
