“Graduation is a bittersweet sensation,” stated The Woodlands High School senior Diego Trevino. He, and over 900 other students, walked across the stage at the Cynthia Mitchell Pavilion on Tuesday, June 4.

“Diego is very humble and very kind. He always has a smile on his face and treats everyone he comes in contact with respect,” said Christy Farris, TWHS counselor, “He is certainly a role model in our school and community. He tries very hard to set an example for others.” For example, “When Diego spoke during Signing Day on our campus, he took time to encourage all of the other students to keep working at their goal and said the persistence and hard work will pay off,” stated Farris.

“I am real excited, but I have a lot of work to do,” said Diego. The work he is talking about is preparing for his first season on the Baylor University Golf Team. Diego started playing golf when he was 8 years old while living in Mexico. He instantly loved the game, and eventually taught his parents how to play.

His parents and he moved to The Woodlands when he was in the eighth grade, and although he did not speak English well, his parents did not want to put him in the ESL program. They felt he would learn the language better by hearing English all the time.

Now, while speaking to Diego, it is impressive knowing he has only spoken English for five years. He is well-spoken with a strong vocabulary that will only grow as he begins college to study business to become an entrepreneur. After college he plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Marketing from Notre Dame or Harvard.

“I would like to be playing professional golf or own my own business, but ultimately I want to help people,” Diego answered when asked where he saw himself in ten years.

“He is very relational and people-centered person. Being around others gives him energy. He loves to interact with others, encourage, and make a connection,” commented Farris, “It is not a surprise that Diego wants to pursue a career which thrives in interaction.”

When not at school or playing golf, Diego enjoys watching his two favorite pros, Rory Mcllroy and Rickie Fowler, or working as a caddy at Carlton Woods. According to him, “My job has led me to meet many people and it gives me a chance to practice my communication skills.”

He is looking forward to moving to Waco and rooming with a friend from San Antonio that he met through golf tournaments. However, he said, “I will miss my friends, The Woodlands faculty, teachers, counselors, administration, and Mr. Colschen. Everyone has been friendly and treated me well.” He went on to say, “I will miss the whole Woodlands experience.”
