THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Recent changes in federal tax law – and new regulations on the horizon – are creating both opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs and business professionals keeping up with tax legislation.

Melissa Rascon, CPA, Executive Director and Senior Tax Manager for Oman, Berry & Associates and Jay Tompkins, CPA, Partner with Karlins, Ramsey & Tompkins are the featured speakers at a special seminar, “Tax Law Changes Affecting You & Your Business,” sponsored by The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce.

The seminar is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, March 4 at The Woodlands Chamber Boardroom, located at 1400 Woodloch Forest Drive. Participation, including lunch, is free for chamber members and $25 for non-members.

“Federal tax laws just became more complicated for those making $250,000 or more in adjusted gross income,” said Rascon. “These changes, plus the tax implications of the Affordable Care Act, make it increasingly imperative to seek a professional consultant if you own your own business.”

The same is true for those who have a significant amount of dividend, interest, or passive income. Keeping up with the American Taxpayer Relief Act and the Affordable Care Act can affect business owners and their employees – potentially impacting 2012 tax return filings and delaying refunds.

Rascon, a veteran tax professional for more than 14 years who has been featured on Fox 26 News, noted more changes in taxation and fiscal accountability are on the way.

“There are three more ‘fiscal cliff’ negotiations looming in the near future that will likely include more tax reform,” said Rascon. “They include sequestration (spending cuts), raising the debt ceiling, and a fiscal budget resolution.”

The seminar by Rascon and Tompkins will address current and anticipated tax reform – especially as it relates to entrepreneurs and business professionals.

“We will discuss tax law changes that directly affect individuals and small business,” said Tompkins. “The seminar will help people understand how the changes in tax law will impact them personally as well as professionally.”
