Oasis Club & Spa for Women closing, indicates downward trend in women's wellness interest

THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- Many women find it hard to find the time to exercise due to the demands of parenting and lack of time, money or motivation. Women are often pulled in many directions…aging parents, work, children, and home responsibilities, all of which take time away from women taking time for themselves. While it’s easy to put everyone else’s needs before their own, the medical profession insists that it’s time for women to take charge of their own health or they won’t live a long, healthy life to be there for others who need them.

In The Woodlands there was an oasis that women could escape to for a brief respite; an hour or two to call their own. They could indulge in a variety of activities essential for the restorative process…training one-on-one or in small groups, yoga, exercise or dance classes, massage, sauna, and facials. And there were also the ladies night out events, birthday spa parties, make-up application seminars, just to name a few extracurricular activities.

Oasis Club & Spa for Women was that peaceful place amidst the hectic pace. Unfortunately the refuge will no longer be available for that the much needed alone time. After five years, Oasis will be closing its doors at the end of August when its lease is up.

“We’ve enjoyed being that refuge for women to escape to,” said owner, Shari Roberts. “Unfortunately we were confronted with just too many obstacles.”

The economic downturn was cited as one of the issues, but dwindling memberships ultimately took their toll. Summer months were especially lean as members would take vacations instead of the ‘staycations’ Oasis offered. In truth, many would forsake time for themselves to act as summer activity directors for their children while the kids are out of school.

“At the end of each summer, the number of women returning to resume their health maintenance program dropped,” said Roberts.

The certified trainers at Oasis will be relocating their fitness programs to Legends Sports Complex once Oasis is officially closed. To encourage women to get back to a proactive health and wellness routine, the trainers collectively offered the following suggestions:

• Learn to say “no” and prioritize. Say ‘yes’ only to what you want to do.

• Avoid a frantic over-committed schedule. Every time you agree to a project, you are essentially denying time for yourself to exercise or downtime to rejuvenate.

• Make time for yourself; it’s important.

Other women’s fitness facilities have met with the same demise. Lifestyle Fitness Center located at 9110 Forest Lane Drive, and a Curves franchise in Spring have both recently closed.

It’s regretful that the upscale women’s only fitness club and luxury spa is closing, but even more significant, the trend may indicate women feel time for themselves and their own health is insignificant.
