THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- St. Luke's The Woodlands Hospital (SLWH) will host a conversation with Brother Emmanuel of Taizé, France on Monday, Sept. 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. in conference rooms 1 & 2.

The event is free and open to individuals who are interested in tapping into their spirituality.

The Rev. Randall W. Trego, who leads the Pastoral Care department of SLWH, explains, “This discussion will help us restore our concepts of a loving God beyond our psychological distortions that disfigure our trust in a God of love.”

According to Rev. Trego, Brother Emmanuel was born in Tours (France) in 1971 and joined the ecumenical monastic Taizé Community in 1991 where he made his final vows in 1994. His field of research is psychology of religion and his work led him to treat the major obstacles that arise on the way to a spiritual experience: doubts about the existence of a God of love in a broken world; hidden fears of God nourished by a real difficulty in believing that we are worthy to be loved; persistent images of a rather distant, frightening, exclusively masculine Divine Being; false oppositions between science and faith, psychology and theology, sexuality and spirituality. He realized that these main obstacles are due to our spontaneous representations of God.

Brother Emmanuel wrote a book in 2011, published in the USA under the title “Love, imperfectly known” (Continuum), to unmask the psychological projections that influence our spontaneous representations of God, so as to rediscover aspects of God’s love often disfigured, misunderstood or unexplored, and then to realize that the beauty of God’s love is far greater than our psychological, cultural and theological conditioning has allowed us to see.

In 2012, he prepared the Taizé meetings in Chicago and Dallas and was invited to give several lectures/conferences in various big cities throughout the USA. He is coming to Texas in September and October to prepare for further Taizé meetings in the Spring of 2014.
