Softball: Lady Cavs fall, playoff race tightens
LUFKIN, Texas – The District 14-5A softball playoff chase got a lot tighter on Friday.
The College Park High School softball (16-5, 6-4) team fell, 8-4, at Lufkin while Oak Ridge dropped a 6-4 decision at A&M Consolidated.
When the smoke cleared, Oak Ridge (7-3) maintained a one-game lead over third-place College Park and Lufkin, both 6-4 in district play. Bryan (5-6) is still alive despite falling to league-leading The Woodlands (10-0).
College Park hosts The Woodlands on Tuesday before closing the 2014 regular season at Bryan on Friday. Both District 14-5A games begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Cavs must win one of those remaining two games in order to clinch a playoff berth. Losses in both games would force a tie-breaker with Bryan and possibly Lufkin, should the Lady Panthers fall in their final two regular season games.
The Woodlands and Oak Ridge have already sewn up playoff spots. A&M Consolidated (2-9) and Conroe (0-10) have been eliminated from the playoff race.
