Township offers new water-wise irrigation class this summer

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Environmental Services Department of The Woodlands Township will be offering a new class this summer on how to use water wisely in the landscape. The class will be delivered as a classic do-it-yourself class, taking participants through a simple, step-by-step, hands-on process. The class is free, but registration is required. Three different dates are available: Saturday mornings at 9 a.m., June 14, July 12 and August 9, 2014.

Water-wise irrigation, such as drip irrigation, systems deliver water in a slow and precise manner directly to the plants’ roots resulting in less water lost to evaporation, runoff and wind, thus maintaining optimum soil moisture. Compared to conventional sprinkler systems, drip irrigation conserves water, reduces the incidence of pests and fungal diseases spread by water, and discourages weeds since water delivery is targeted to landscape plants.

For vegetable gardens, drip systems can be adapted to include micro sprinklers and micro sprayers which distribute the water over a wider area where low volume overhead irrigation is needed. Rain water harvesting will also be discussed and participants will be shown how to retro-fit their downspouts to add rain barrels for a water-wise landscape.
