THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Unless you suffer from Triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13, or even worse, Paraskevidekatriaphobia, fear of Friday the 13th, today marks a most unusual phenomenon, a full moon on Friday the 13th, providing an opportunity to witness this rare occurrence. The last time a full moon occurred on a Friday the 13th was October 13, 2000, fourteen years ago, but, it will be much longer before it occurs again. The next occurrence will be 26 years later on August 13, 2049.

Unfortunately, unless you were out gazing at the moon at 11:13 p.m. CDT late Thursday night, you missed the most spectacular viewing...when the moon was in perigee, meaning the point in the moon’s orbit in which it is nearest to the earth. But then, that wouldn’t have been Friday 13th.

Stargazers in The Woodlands will have another opportunity to take in this spectacular view Friday night, albeit, no longer an ‘official’ full moon, if not for thunderstorms being forecasted. Isolated thunderstorms may sporadically occur, but partly cloudy skies will make making viewing intermittent.

Woodlands Online would like to capture this rare occurrence in a photo gallery on our website, and is asking photographers to send their photos to us via Facebook. All photos will be posted to the site, and a winner will be selected for a prize.

To those afflicted by one of the above mentioned phobias related to the number 13 or Friday the 13th, the best defense is to avoid.
