Lone Star College-Montgomery students receive Coca-Cola scholarships

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - Lone Star College-Montgomery students Hanna Brumbelow and Blake Kelly received scholarships from Coca-Cola. Brumbelow, a Woodlands native, has been recognized as a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar. She will receive a $1,500 scholarship from The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for this honor. Kelly, a Sugar Land native, was recognized as a Coca-Cola Leader of Promise and will receive a $1,000 scholarship for this honor.

“The whole LSC-Montgomery family congratulates Hanna and Blake on these awards,” said Dr. Rebecca Riley, LSC-Montgomery president. “Their dedication to their studies and the community are an example to all Mavericks.”

Brumbelow and 49 students from other community colleges were selected from a pool of almost 2,000 nominations. An independent panel of judges considered the students’ academic rigor, GPA, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service. “I was with my mom when I got the email that I received this scholarship,” Brumbelow said. “I just stared at my phone in disbelief. This is the first scholarship I’ve ever received.”

Brumbelow enjoys taking government classes at LSC-Montgomery. She is involved in the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society and National Model U.N.. “Lone Star Montgomery has provided me the opportunity to truly come into my own,” said Brumbelow. “The professors, classmates and resources I have been able to work with have provided me with the tools to become the best student I can be.”

During her student career, Brumbelow has worked as a political intern for State Senator Sylvia Garcia, attended NEW Leadership Texas summer institute, and was selected to Harvard University's highly competitive Public Policy Leadership Conference. Brumbelow is applying to transfer to the University of Texas at Austin in the fall.

Kelly is one of 200 students to win Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship. An independent team of judges reviewed applications to pick scholarship recipients. “I got an email that read, ‘you are finalist, join us on a webcam conference,’” said Kelly. “I thought it was going to be an additional interview, but actually the person running the call told me I had won, they just wanted to see my reaction.”

Kelly is transferring to Texas A&M to study sports marketing. He is an officer of fellowship in PTK and helped spearhead a project for first generation college students at Conroe High School. “We talked to the students about college and what it takes to get here,” said Kelly. “We realized since they are the first in their family to pursue higher education, there is no one around to help them or give them advice.”

Kelly also volunteers with First Colony Dream League, a baseball league for physically and or intellectually challenged players. “I believe every kid should be able to play baseball,” said Kelly. “I help them bat or run down the baseline. It is a lot of fun and it is very rewarding.”

Brumbelow and Kelly traveled to Maryland to be recognized for their awards at the PTK Annual Convention.
