CONROE, Texas -- Texas A&M Forest Service will possibly conduct several small 20 to 40 acre prescribed burns within larger identified areas (Highlighted in RED) at W. Goodrich Jones State Forest starting Tuesday, March 5 to Wednesday, March 6 at 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., as weather conditions permit.

See the attached maps. The state forest trails around the prescribed burning areas will be barricaded and closed to the public for the duration of the burning operation.

Prescribed fire is considered a standard forest management tool for endangered species habitat restoration, undergrowth vegetation reduction, and providing for community safety especially from catastrophic wildfires.

The Texas A&M Forest Service is notifying the surrounding city and fire officials, as well as area residents and groups who frequent the forest, by email and posting notification signs. Agency fire officials and equipment will be on-site at the forest. This will also be used as a cross-training exercise between local fire departments and Texas A&M Forest Service to better prepare for protecting communities.
