CONROE, TX -- n the evening of July 4th, at approximately 9:00 p.m., Firefighters and Medics with Montgomery County ESD 1 and MCHD-EMS responded to reports of a fire with injuries in the 12000 block of Pegasus Drive in Willis, Texas. The first Firefighters to arrive were met with a large crowd that had gathered near the community boat ramp to view fireworks on the lake. While the crowd, estimated to be a thousand or more, were gathered to watch fireworks across the lake, residents nearby were shooting off fireworks from the upper level of their boat dock. Those residents reported that one of the fireworks had malfunctioned setting their cache of fireworks on fire and blocking their escape route. While escaping off the upper deck, three persons suffered minor injuries and were treated and transported to area hospitals.

Malfunctioning fireworks blamed for incident that sends three persons to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

While this was the most significant incident in terms of injuries, MCFMO Investigators are continuing their investigations into two other residential fires believed to have been started when trash bags containing spent fireworks were placed in or near a garage.

While the fireworks sales season has ended, the discharge of fireworks is legal year round and residents are reminded to treat all spent fireworks as potential ignition sources and thoroughly douse them with water before placing them in trash bags or containers.
