MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX - Just before 4 am Friday morning, the East Montgomery County Fire Department was dispatched along with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to the 26000 block of Carol Lane in Splendora for a welfare check. When they arrived they found family members performing CPR on 42 year old Jeffrey Hughes. Mr. Hughes lived in a recreational vehicle on the property and neighbors responding to the sound of a fire alarm found him unresponsive inside the RV. Deputies, Firefighters and MCHD EMS Paramedics continued efforts to resuscitate Mr. Hughes but were ultimately unsuccessful. He was pronounced deceased at the scene and an autopsy was ordered by Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Jason Dunn.

Upon entering the RV, Firefighters discovered that a small fire had filled it with smoke and had consumed a chair in the living room. Fire Investigators from the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and began an investigation into the cause of the fire and the death of the lone occupant, Mr. Hughes. MCFMO Investigators attended the victim’s autopsy today and confirmed that the preliminary cause of death was smoke inhalation.

The investigation into the cause of this fatal fire is ongoing as Investigators will be continuing to examine the scene and analyze forensic test results in an effort to identify the events leading up to the death of Mr. Hughes.
