Six-run first inning leads The Woodlands Baseball to Game 1 win
GEORGETOWN, TX -- The opening game of the Regional Semifinal between The Woodlands and Mckinney Boyd was basically over just as fast it started on Wednesday night. The Highlanders cruised past Boyd in a 7-2 rout of the Broncos, with six of the seven runs scored in the first inning.
After starting pitcher Cam Caley got out of an early bases-loaded jam without allowing a run, the Highlanders bats came out hot in the bottom of the first. The Woodlands earned six runs on five hits and two walks. Boyd didn’t help their case as they committed an error and hit Zach Escovedo to help fuel the Highlanders explosive first inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, after Boyd slowly chipped away at the Highlander lead, Casey Sunseri sent a rocket into left field to increase their lead back to five and put a bow on the Game 1 victory.
Caley pitched four and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts before Hampton Long finished the game and secured Game 1.
Game 2 will be back at East View HS, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. With a win, The Highlanders will advance to the Region 2 finals.
